Simple Machine –A system that makes work easier or changes the direction of the applied force

Force –The push or pull that alters the motion of a moving object or moves a stationary object

Matter –A material that occupies space and has mass

Mass –The amount of matter in something

Temperature –The degree of coldness or hotness on a definite scale

Volume –The amount of space occupied by a three-dimensional object

Earth Science

Planet – large body in the sky that revolves around a star. The Earth, a planet, revolves around the sun, a star

Solar System – the set of planets and the sun where the Earth is located. The planets revolve around the sun

Star – an object in the sky which produces energy the sun is an average star

System – a group of parts or items that form a unified whole

Weathering –the action of physical conditions on Earth (weather) that cause earth materials to change in color, texture, composition, or form; mechanical or chemical processes which break rocks down into smaller pieces

Erosion –the process where earth materials are broken down and moved from one area to another

Renewable resource –natural resources that are constantly being recycled. An example of a renewable resource is water.

Nonrenewable resource –natural resources that are used up at a rate faster than they can be replaced by natural process. Examples of nonrenewable resource are fossil fuels and gold.

Inexhaustible resource –natural resources which will not be used up during our lifetime based on the current rate of use on Earth

Habitat –the place where an organism lives. Habitats supply the organism with food, shelter, moisture, and temperature for survival.

Ecosystem –the living and nonliving components of an area

Preservation –maintaining the conditions present in a natural environment

Conservation –saving resources present in a natural environment

Life Science

Heredity –The passing of traits from parents to offspring

Parent –An organism, animal or plant that can bring forth offspring

Offspring –The living organism that is the result of reproductive processes of animals or plants. Babies are considered the offspring of their parents.

Adaptation –An adjustment an organism makes to better fit into or exist in its environment.
