Homework Policies

At UT Elementary School, students are expected to follow through with homework assigned by the classroom teacher. Each student is expected to practice their reading at home daily and record their efforts in a nightly reading log, as well as complete assignments in core content areas. Failure to complete homework will result in a homework referral to the child’s parent. The child’s parent will be called by the teacher on the third homework referral. The student will receive a discipline referral to the office on the fourth homework referral. It is an expectation of enrollment at UT Elementary School that homework be complete by students and support by parents or guardians. First Grade Homework

Homework will be sent home on Monday, and the finished homework is due back to school on Friday. Students must bring homework folders to school every day so they can use their guided reading books in class and so that teachers and parents have a way to communicate. Homework folders will be spot checked throughout the week. Homework is done nightly consisting of spelling/phonics, math review and correction, sight word flashcards, and reading.
Reading homework is crucial in first grade. Students must practice reading their book every night in order to increase their fluency, comprehension, and word retention. Students in first grade meet with their teacher everyday in the classroom for a small, guided reading group which consists of three to five students. Parents can provide a smaller adult to child ratio at home. Good teaching is the foundation of a good student, but teachers will always need parents to support school work at home.
